Workers Compensation Codes Related to Stores

Classification codes are used to organize employees according to their work functions and job requirements. Currently, insurance companies and brokers can use roughly 800 class codes provided by the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) to classify personnel for rating reasons. To start pricing a policy, insurance firms establish a base manual rate for each class code.

Sorting employees correctly is a crucial step in obtaining quotes. Small firms may lose thousands of dollars due to incorrectly classified workers. After an annual audit, you might find that you are overpaying for coverage or that your debt has increased.

Class Code 8017 | Retail Store

Insurance for retail stores is a fairly broad category of business. For the majority of retail establishments that offer a wide range of general products, it is the most widely used class code. All establishments that aren’t designated as specialty stores under another code fall under class 8017.

Office supply stores, gift and novelty shops, electronics, paint, rental agencies, shoes and clothes, sporting goods, liquor, tobacco, consignment and pawn shops, pet supplies, books and magazines, baked goods, medical supplies, and many other related inventory are examples of retail stores that usually fall under this category.

Class Code 8006 | Grocery Store

Generally speaking, perishables are sold in grocery stores rather than dry or durable commodities. Grocery stores may have different underwriting requirements and greater labor expenditures, even when the rates are comparable to those of retail establishments. Convenience stores, coffee and tea shops, retail food stores, and confectionery and candy stores are all included in class 8006.

Class Code 8010 | Hardware Store

Retail and wholesale establishments that offer hardware products, such as tools, nails, bolts, timber, and other related things, are covered by the hardware store class code. This group includes locksmiths, retailers of outdoor power equipment, and farm supply companies.

Class Code 8044 | Furniture Store

Retail and wholesale dealers that specialize in furniture sales are covered by this code. Items for sale include office furniture, lawn furniture, antiques, and home goods.

Class Code 8045 | Drug Store

Pharmacies and medication stores are specifically covered by class code 8045. It is acceptable to compound medications incidentally.

Class Code 8018 | Wholesale Distribution

Usually, wholesalers supply a range of goods to retailers rather than to end users. Products could include gadgets, office supplies, consumables, and appliances. Wholesalers fall under class code 8018 and are assessed differently.

Alternative State Class Codes for Stores:

States occasionally stray from the NCCI-recommended industrial class code. For some business segments, they might demand the use of a state-specific class code in place of the NCCI code.

Numerous other categorization numbers, such Jewelry Repair-3383, Florists-8001, Bicycles-8010, and others, are also used to identify specialty establishments. Class codes can differ because various states frequently use distinct codes for different kinds of classification. What Does Workers' Comp Work?

Workers comp coverage protects employees when injured. It makes good financial sense for both parties.

Accidents and injuries occur. These mishaps and claims are covered by a no-fault scheme called workers compensation insurance. In most states, it’s mandated by law.
